Consumer Watch with Liz Crenshaw

What's for dinner, at this time of day those can be the three most dreaded words a Mom can hear. But Meal Assembly stores such as Let's Dish...are making that answer a bit easier for busy Moms.

But how's the food? Liz Crenshaw created a little competition to help you decide if Meal Assembly food is really good enough to eat.

Two years ago we drove up to Timonium Maryland to do a story on the first Meal Assembly store in this area, Let's Dish. Since then, a bunch of competitors have opened. So we decided to re-visit the topic, buy some of their food, and call in an expert to give it a tasting.

WHAT'S FOR DINNER AT JASON TEPPER'S HOUSE? USUALLY SOMETHING GOOD. HE'S THE OWNER AND EXECUTIVE CHEF AT LA MICHE, A COUNTRY FRENCH RESTAURANT IN BETHESDA, MARYLAND.

TONIGHT, THOUGH, DINNER'S DIFFERENT. IT'LL BE HEATED UP BY TEPPER, BUT ONLY AFTER BEING DESIGNED, PREPPED, AND ASSEMBLED SOMEWHERE ELSE.

THAT SOMEWHERE ELSE IS A MEAL ASSEMBLY STORE, A COMMERCIAL KITCHEN THAT OFFERS PRE-PLANNED MEALS AND ALL THE FIXIN'S ALREADY PREPPED. ALL CONSUMERS HAVE TO DO IS ASSEMBLE THE INGREDIENTS, TAKE THE FOOD HOME, AND HEAT IT UP. DINNER'S DONE.

SO WE BOUGHT DINNERS FROM THREE MEAL ASSEMBLY STORES THAT HAVE VIRGINIA AND MARYLAND LOCATIONS.

THIS SAVORY APRICOT-CRUSTED SALMON CAME FROM LET'S DISH.

Jason Tepper, Executive Chef
That's going to be really nice. The apricot should bake up nice and get nice and sticky.

Crenshaw
THE SALMON IS SUPPOSED TO BE READY IN ABOUT 30-MINUTES. IT COST US $25.

...

AND FINALLY THE APRICOT-CRUSTED SALMON, $25 FROM LET'S DISH.

Chef Tepper
Really, really nice.

Crenshaw
Really nice.

Chef Tepper
Really nice because the salmon, you get the full flavor from the salmon. The fruit crust is not overpowering at all. It's not competing with the flavor from the salmon, but has a totally unique flavor compared to the salmon.

Crenshaw
TEPPER GIVES THE SALMON 4 STARS. HE SAYS MEAL ASSEMBLY WON'T REPLACE RESTAURANTS, BUT THINKS THEY SERVE UP PRETTY GOOD EATING AT HOME.

Chef Tepper
I wouldn't tell anyone it's pre-made if they came over my house.

For our story, Chef Tepper bought meals already assembled for takeout at the three stores. You can buy meals that way too, though most customers choose to assemble meals themselves chosen from the stores' online menus.
